Public events,
formal conferences, and speaker series bring renowned academics and activists
to campus to address important human rights isssues to a broader audience,
including students, faculty, human rights activists, practitioners, and
Chicago residents. Over the past five years, the Program has held large-scale
interdisciplinary conferences on post-conflict reconciliation, torture,
academic freedom, global labor justice, and the practice of human rights.
Topical speaker series serve as timely responses to critical
issues of the day, bringing worldwide experts to campus to educate the
community and spur dialogue. Recent highlights include teach-ins on globalization,
world responses to September 11, 2001 events, and human rights alternatives
in the Middle East.
