INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS LAW AND PRACTICE

This course will introduce students to the legal architecture of international human rights law. Whilst the legal framing of rights emphasizes universality and the common good, its application reflects the historical compromises and political uncertainties of the times.   This course will explore the tensions produced when politics meets ‘the law’ and examine the issues, actors, doctrines, and practices that make up the human rights project.   

TA Essential Functions

Student Support

  • Support student success in identifying components of research, methodological approaches
  • Provide tutoring through “drop-in” time and/or facilitate conference calls that offer tutorial support
  • Help students locate and use research tools and resources  
  • Help students identify current research articles and research-related instructional materials

Course and Instructor Support

  • Support curriculum through familiarity with the course syllabus and Canvas course shell 
  • Support faculty with organizational tasks related to student assessment and grade book application
  • Assist faculty with classroom instruction and/or lead student discussion 
  • Conduct a preliminary review of student assignments and provide feedback under the supervision of the faculty instructor
  • Communicate with students on behalf of the faculty instructor

Required Qualifications

  • Understanding of relevant literatures on human rights law 
  • Ability to engage in socio-legal literatures and approach 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in active support of diversity and inclusiveness
  • Demonstrated interest in human rights

MILITANT DEMOCRACY & THE PREVENTATIVE STATE

This course will examine the impact of militant democracy and the preventative state on the current human rights landscape.  It will look specifically at how the narrative of prevention and protection has impacted normative changes to fundamental human rights and how the permanence of emergency is beginning to give the concept of ‘securitization of rights’ legal legs.

  • Help students locate and use research tools and resources  
  • Help students with journal preparation 
  • Help students identify current research articles and research-related instructional materials   

Course and Instructor Support 

  • Support curriculum through familiarity with the course syllabus and Canvas course shell 
  • Support faculty with organizational tasks related to student assessment and grade book application
  • Assist faculty with classroom instruction and/or lead student discussion 
  • Co-facilitate online discussion forums and videoconference calls with the faculty instructor (if needed)
  • Conduct a preliminary review of student assignments and provide feedback under the supervision of the faculty instructor
  • Communicate with students on behalf of the faculty instructor

Required Qualifications

  • Understanding of relevant literatures on militant democracy/states of emergency 
  • Ability to engage in socio-legal literatures and approach  

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with hybrid and online teaching
  • Demonstrated experience in active support of diversity and inclusiveness
  • Demonstrated interest in human rights
