Rodolfo Stavenhagen

Rodolfo Stavenhagen

Professor Rodolfo Stavenhagen (1932-2016) was a Professor of Sociology at the Colegio de Mexico. He served as a visiting professor at Stanford, Harvard, and the University of Paris, as President of Facultad LatinoAmericana de Ciencias Sociales (the Latin American network of social science research institutions), and on the board of the Social Sciences Research Council. 

In addition to his academic activities, Professor Stavenhagen served as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights and Fundamental Freedoms of Indigenous Peoples from 2001-2008. He grew up in Mexico, where he and his German-Jewish refugee parents had fled just prior to the outbreak of World War II. In the late 1940s he was sent to the University of Chicago, where he earned his BA in 1951.
