Humanitarianism

2022-23 Artist for the People Michelle Daniel Jones invites incarcerated and formerly incarcerated artists to submit visual works created during COVID-19 that respond to the theme "Captive Living and Dying With COVID-19.

Selected works will be displayed in the Mourning Our Losses Traveling Memorial (MOLTM) to honor the lives of people who died in detention facilities in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic. The traveling memorial will be on view at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts(915 E 60th St.) in July 2023.

The Mourning Our Losses Traveling Memorial (MOLTM) is designed to bring to directly impacted communities the experience of our digital memorial that honors the lives of people who died in detention facilities in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic. The MOLTM will showcase the artistry of those incarcerated and formerly incarcerated through works that speak to the horrors of the pandemic. We remember the lives of people who died from abominable public health conditions. We believe a loss of any human life warrants mourning and our traveling memorial, through art, education, and lived experience, shares that message across the United States.

MOLTM invites incarcerated artists to submit visual works, including, but not limited to, drawings, paintings, and collages, in any art style (e.g. realism, impressionism, abstract, graffiti, pop art, etc.) for consideration. Works may be done in any medium and any size. We will also accept short poetry for hanging. All submitted pieces should respond to the theme: Captive Living and Dying With COVID-19.
