Faculty Director Mark Bradley was recently featured in a powerful TIME article, “21 Lessons From America’s Worst Moments.”

The piece recognizes that the coming Fourth of July celebrations offer a time for reflecting, not just on America’s best moments but also on its worst: “A look back at that past does reveal that, at the very least, even the worst moments contain lessons that can still apply today. And if we listen to those lessons, perhaps a better future will be possible.”

To that end, TIME asked 21 historians to write about their picks for worst moments from American history. Read the full article, including Mark’s sobering entry on the My Lai massacre.
