Parrhesia and The Maroon will bring Gustavo Arellano of the Los Angeles Times to campus in November 2025. Arellano, an author and columnist, covers Southern California and the American West for the Times. He previously worked at Orange County Weekly, where he was an investigative reporter and wrote a column called ¡Ask a Mexican!
Arellano was a finalist for the 2025 Pulitzer Prize in Commentary for his pieces, filed from across the Southwest during Election 2024, shattering stereotypes about the political leanings of Latino voters.
The editors of The Maroon expressed interest in Mr. Arellano because of his strong use of a personal voice: in his weekly columns, as in his memoir, Orange County: A Personal History, he writes from his perspective as the son of Mexican immigrants, one of whom arrived in this country in the trunk of a Chevy.
